Roebling Road 2-day track event Jan.27-28, 2001
(all photos and copy by Wei-Shen Chin)
After a frosty start, a warm sunny day developed and greeted our group of track enthusiasts for the first Chin Motorsports event to be held at the 2.02 mile 9-turn SCCA track at Roebling Road outside Savannah, GA.
There was plenty of open track time on both days. A wide variety of cars showed up...from a Subaru Legacy station wagon to a Panoz GTS racer. Everybody enjoyed the comradarie and we had another accident free event (although we did have one CLOSE call when our sole S2000 spun at nearly 90mph and JUST missed hitting the only wall on the property...on the front straight!). Enjoy the photos below! If you have any more that you wish me to post, please email to wchin@NSXFlorida.com.
There were several "firsts" related to this event:
First DEER hit on the way to the event...Nelson Landa (Deer Nelson)...just south of Orlando on the turnpike at night.
First spinout on the way to the track....Petra in the BMW Sunday!
Some other notes....
Most laps by ONE car, probably the Formula Mazda...at LEAST 260 and two sets of tires.
Furthest drive to participate....Nelson Landa...Miami, FL...348 miles
Most speeding tickets...two, one for each car on the way home from the event!
Best practical joke....you'll have to ask Nelson Landa and Gary Jensen about that!
registration at the Red Roof Inn (a brand new hotel...rates were only $49.99
per night and included a continental breakfast)....the staff was FABULOUS and thought
ahead for our visit...even wrote out directions to Roebling Road!

three NSXs of Gary Jensen, Scott McKay, and Nelson Landa

me this weekend....I started the ball rolling with a first outing of 1:19, Gary came back
with a 1:18, 1:17, and finally a 1:16 on Sunday early afternoon....that made me go out ONE
more session to turn in a 1:18, 1:17 and in the final two laps, a 1:16....now for a
rematch at the next event! (for comparison most of the NSXs were in the 1:25 to 1:30 range
and the Viper GTS was running 1:19). We were punching through 155mph in the front
straight in the FM.
Gary in the Formaul Mazda running his 1:16 lap!
I have my wheels and my 6-year-old son Austin has HIS!
Rick Cuevas and Dick Jones (student) with his new S2000
novice drivers, husband and wife Rod McClelland and Alexander Cjivanovich with their Subaru Legacy station wagon....YES, we did wear out the left front tire!
Derek Leonard and his crew chief get ready to take the Panoz racecar out on the track
Gary and Charles Roach in their Miata
Zane Stephens (standing) and Mark Underwood with his ITS RX-7
Joseph Sullivan and his Porsche 914
"I keep breaking things"....Scott McKay having brake problems...but THIS time it's a leaking brake line rather than the usual suspects....bad pads.
Ian Stewart (left) greets 911 driver Eric Huffman, who came a day early to tech
and get some practice laps in....unfortunately he developed an oil leak and didn't run on
Sunday!
Rick corner balances John Grieco's awesome Viper GTS
Mike Dunn (CRX) stays in front of John Grieco (Viper) with Nelson Landa (NSX) in the background as the cars exit turn two and head to turn three
Ernie Wilding running a quick 1:25 in his race-prepared ITS Integra
We had a great dinner Saturday night (photos below) at Riverhouse Seafood in quaint downtown Savannah, right on the waterfront. 26 people attended the banquet that was arranged by Ernie Wilding. The NSXs caused quite a stir in the downtown area....unfortunately one got TOWED!
Suzan and Austin joined us Sunday for lunch at the track
John Grieco in his Viper GTS...yes he still has his red NSX!

We hope everyone had a great time. Thanks to all the staff at Roebling Road for another clean, safe, and fun event!
